A Bridge to Terabithia

Mrs. Lust's 6th Grade LS Reading/Language Arts students are creating their own personal "Terabithia" in the MakerSpace classroom.  After reading the novel, the students had to first design what they wanted their own kingdom to contain.  The next step was to implement and create their very own kingdom!  The students used their imaginations to create pieces of art!

Invention Convention 2016

On December 8, 2016, the Yough Intermediate School District hosted an event for gifted students. There were an estimated 150 participants and the schools that attended were as follows: Norwin, Belle Vernon, Charleroi, Mt Pleasant, Penn Trafford, Greater Latrobe, Yough, Southmoreland, Franklin Regional, Monessen, Ringgold, and Burrell. Appropriately named invention convention, this competition  allowed students to imagine and present prototypes of their ingenious creations. Whether it be solving the everyday problem or world-wide dilemmas spectators are guaranteed to see ingenuity from many young minds. The competition scheduled on the same date this year and parents are welcome to observe their kids compete at the Yough Intermediate Middle School.

A Lesson in DNA

Students in Mrs. Knepp’s 5th grade class recently  created and decoded a “DNA recipe” for man’s best friend to observe how variations in DNA lead to the inheritance of different traits. Strips of paper (representing DNA) were randomly selected and used to assemble a DNA molecule. Students read the DNA recipe to create a drawing of their pet, and compare it with others in the class to note similarities and differences.

Turkey Trot 2016

YIMS once again participated in the annual Turkey Trot, a fun event whose proceeds benefit the Westmoreland County Food Bank. This is an event that the students really look forward to each year. The students donate $5 to participate or $20 to participate and receive an event t-shirt. This year we also combined this initiative with both Breast Cancer Awareness and Autism Awareness. The students collected $5,500 for the Westmoreland County Food Bank, bringing our Grand Total to $95,855.07 for the eleven years of participation. Because of the student’s efforts we will also be donating $500 to both Breast Cancer Awareness and Autism Awareness. A fantastic effort by all of the students and staff at YIMS!
